Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier

Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier is the quiet constant of Eritrean cycling — the rider who has been in the WorldTour peloton longest, and the one whose work is least visible from the outside. Born in August 1994, he came up through the domestic club AS.BE.CO and won the national road title in 2014 before Dimension Data brought him into the professional ranks.

His record with the national team is the backbone of Eritrea’s continental dominance in the 2010s: team time trial gold at the African Championships in 2016, 2017 and 2018, and the continental road title in 2018. At home he has been close to unbeatable against the clock, taking the national time trial championship in 2019, 2023, 2024 and 2025.

He joined Trek–Segafredo in 2021 and has stayed through the team’s transition to Lidl–Trek, where he rides as a climbing domestique on Grand Tour terrain — the role that rarely produces results worth listing and almost always decides them for somebody else. He has collected combativity awards at the Giro d’Italia in 2023 and 2024 for riding the way he always has: on the front, early, for someone else’s win.

At 32 he is the most experienced rider in Eritrea’s Montréal selection, and the one the younger four will ride behind on the Mount Royal climb.
